Confluence: Diversity celebrated at Opera House

Opera House came alive with rhythms, music and dance on September 18, as a part of the celebration of the Confluence Festival of India in Australia.

Confluence represents a meeting point – of arts and artistes, of ideas and ideals, of cultures and civilizations and that was what this event was aimed at.

The pre-concert reception was hosted by the NSW Government and John Ajaka MP Minister for Ageing, Minister for Disability Services, and Minister for Multiculturalism, represented the Premier of NSW.

The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of Tourism Culture, Navdeep Suri, High Commissioner of India in Australia and the Consul General of India in Sydney B. Vanlalvawna.

The event included a plethora of performances including Sonam Kalra’s Sufi rendition, Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, Pung Cholam by Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Kathak by Ruchi Sanghi Dance Company and much more . The best part was that there was a fusion of Aboriginal, Pung Cholam, Kathak and Odissi dance forms, thus justifying the festival purpose.

The show stopper was the performance by Raghu Dixit and team. Often hailed as India’s biggest cultural and musical export, Raghu Dixit’s unique brand of infectious, happy music transcends age , genre and even language.

Confluence festival is the most significant showcase of Indian arts and culture ever to be staged in Australia, taking place in seven cities across the country between August and November 2016.

Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Australia in November 2014, the festival takes place over twelve weeks through August – November this year, showcasing rich and diverse dance, music, theatre and visual arts from India. It also includes conferences and workshops that share insights into traditional and contemporary Indian culture and its confluence with Australia’s curious and congenial populace.
