When Australian Rules Meets Cultural Diversity: 2017 AFL Multicultural Festival

The 2017 AFL Multicultural Festival, presented by Australia Post and supported by Multicultural NSW is set to kick off this weekend, Saturday, 29 July, from 12pm – 6pm.

Members of the public will be able to enjoy all of this for free at Cathy Freeman Park, located at Sydney Olympic Park just opposite Spotless Stadium. This year’s festival footfall is expected to exceed 15,000, with representation from across a broad range of cultural backgrounds.

The AFL Multicultural Festival presented by Australia Post is all about celebrating the many diverse cultures who share a passion for Australian Rules Football. It connects with Western Sydney’s ethnically and culturally diverse populace by providing a platform for lovers of art, culture and sport to experience an exciting cultural extravaganza.

Through this engaging platform, the AFL aims to welcome culturally diverse communities and increase their representation within the game, in a way that reflects Australia’s contemporary identity as a cultural melting pot.

The Festival is held in Sydney Olympic Park in conjunction with the GIANTS vs. Fremantle showpiece game in the Toyota AFL Multicultural Round. The Festival is designed to introduce new cultures to the game of Australian Rules Football.

The 2017 festival will be headlined by internationally acclaimed hip hop artist and AFL Multicultural Ambassador, L-FRESH the LION. An Australian artist of Sikh heritage, L-Fresh’s powerful lyrics advocate acceptance, understanding and respect amongst all members of society – irrespective of their differences.

Also a must see, Riverside Theatre will be delivering their rendition of the multi award-winning musical, Miss Saigon, the second massively successful offering from the creators of Les Misérables. Passionate, profound, and heart-wrenchingly honest, Miss Saigon depicts the tragic love story of a Vietnamese woman and her American lover during the Vietnam war.

Alongside these unmissable headliners, the 2017 Toyota AFL Multicultural Festival presented by Australia Post will feature six hours of entertainment, including 500 performers from across 20 culturally diverse communities.

Free your mind and body with a Tai Chi activity, listen to the incredible voice of Kamahl – an Australian veteran with over 10 million record sales under his belt – and get your body moving alongside our many cultural dance troupes.

In addition to the performances, the 2017 AFL Multicultural Festival will feature an extensive array of cultural activation stands, food stalls and resource hubs to provide both informative and hands on experiences to all attendees. Stop by at the Big Paella stall and line your stomach with the exotic flavors of traditional Spanish cuisine before heading over to the Poi workshop for a lesson on traditional Maori exercises to increase strength and flexibility. If you are looking to leave with a memory to mark the occasion, consider stopping by at the Henna Tattoo stall to learn about traditional Indian tattoo practices and inscribe your skin with stunning patterns of cultural significance.
