‘A life full of music’

Some people are exceptionally talented and nothing can deter their spirits. This holds true for Sunita Sethi, who after migrating to Australia in 1982 continued her passion for music even in this new country and carved a niche for herself.

Sunita is a multifaceted personality with many feathers in her cap.  She is a professional singer, an actress, a cook, an experienced beauty therapist and also a qualified Kathak dancer.

It is a soothing experience to listen to her and she straddles different genres like classical, light and folk music with ease.

Music, she says, has always been an intrinsic part of her life and it was her love for music that she persuaded her studies in music.

“When it came to choosing a career, I decided to graduate in music. I completed my graduation with specialty in Indian Classical music and started teaching at Khalsa College Delhi

After completing her studies in music she was immensely involved in taking her passion further.   She also won many prizes in music at state level.

“Music is nothing but pure emotion. I believe any form of art is persuaded through emotions. I love music and so I guess it is inevitable that sometimes unintentionally that takes priority. I am blessed with people all around who understand this, and everyone has been very supportive,” she says.

“While in India I used to perform frequently at All India Radio and Doordarshan. After coming to Australia it was again a fresh start, so I faced some hardships in the beginning,” says Sunita.

“In 1982, I got an opportunity to perform at Shell Folkloric festival in WA and with that I started my career here.  I have also recorded a Sikh devotional cassette in Sydney,” she says.

She loves experimentation and has worked in different fields.

“I have acted in three Australian –Indian films, owned and ran a restaurant with the name ‘Geetmahal’ in Sydney and also ran a saloon in Sydney for 20 years,” she adds.

Besides her hectic schedules, she always finds time for her passion and also teaches the music and dance to people in her spare time.

Sunita is also a qualified beauty therapist and also a fitness instructor for curves. She also participated in Zee Anktashari 2002 and represented Australia.

Recently she performed in a well acclaimed play, ‘Goddess of Hinduism, under the direction of Alex Singh and her role of an abandoned mother in that play was appreciated by all.

Presently she is also working in two films, one in Hindi and other in Punjab.

“I am happy with what I have been able to achieve so far. Music is a panacea for the mind and body. My dream is to take my passion to new heights and to make a special place of Indian music and dance in Australia”, says Sunita.
