NSW investing in teaching for better students

Some of NSW’s best public primary school teachers will begin mentoring and coaching other teachers to improve students’ results.

The move is part of the NSW Government’s $224 million Quality Teaching, Successful Students package, which provides additional staffing so selected experienced teachers can take up mentoring and coaching roles.

The package enables these teachers to:

  • mentor and coach other teachers
    • observe teachers in their classrooms and demonstrate effective teaching strategies
    • monitor student performance data across the school to ensure teachers are focused on areas of need
    • collaborate within their school and with colleagues in other schools.

While visiting Ryde East Public School, a school that will benefit from the package, NSW Premier Mike Baird said that students’ results would be lifted by improving teachers’ skills.

“In the best school systems in the world, the top teachers pass on their expertise to their colleagues and that helps lift teaching standards in every classroom in that school.”

The package is part of the Gonski agreement and coincides with the Local Schools , Local Decisions education reform.
